The Environment Today Explored.

Symphony, is the annual inter collegiate cultural festival of K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering. Held at the beginning of February every year, Symphony attracts a crowd of 15,000 students from 150 colleges all over the city. Competitions at Symphony encompass a wide range of genres, including Music, Dramatics, Literary, Arts, Dance and Fine Arts.Every year, variety is introduced in the competitions, posing a challenge for the competitors, and providing a refreshing change for the audience. This festival has progressed by leaps and bounds over the years with 50 odd events being organized in just two days.


Pronites at Symphony perhaps steal the show with the festival boasting of a guest history like Bombay Vikings, Rahul Vaidya, Parikrama, Strings, Euphoria, Dj Suketu, Louis Banks and many more.

Symphony 2010 plans to venture into an even bigger arena,planning to pull in many more with the Laser show arranged for the first day. Our theme for this year is ' Emotions & Expressions '. Thus the talents of the students from myriad disciplines are manifested in the various events; each signifying an important dimension of human emotion and expression.

Aerosols are tiny particles suspended in the air. Some occur naturally, originating from volcanoes, dust storms, forest and grassland fires, living vegetation, and sea spray. Human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels and the alteration of natural surface cover, also generate aerosols. Averaged over the globe, aerosols made by human activities currently account for about 10 percent of the total amount of aerosols in our atmosphere. Most of that 10 percent is concentrated in the Northern Hemisphere, especially downwind of industrial sites, slash-and-burn agricultural regions, and overgrazed grasslands.

Scientists have much to learn about the way aerosols affect regional and global climate. We have yet to accurately quantify the relative impacts on climate of natural aerosols and those of human origin. Moreover, we do not know in what regions of the planet the amount of atmospheric aerosol is increasing, is diminishing, and is remaining roughly constant. Overall, we are even unsure whether aerosols are warming or cooling our planet.

Why do we care about aerosols?
Aerosols tend to cause cooling of the Earth's surface immediately below them. Because most aerosols reflect sunlight back into space, they have a "direct" cooling effect by reducing the amount of solar radiation that reaches the surface. The magnitude of this cooling effect depends on the size and composition of the aerosol particles, as well as the reflective properties of the underlying surface. It is thought that aerosol cooling may partially offset expected global warming that is attributed to increases in the amount of carbon dioxide from human activity.
Aerosols are also believed to have an "indirect" effect on climate by changing properties of clouds. Indeed, if there were no aerosols in the atmosphere, there would be no clouds. It is very difficult to form clouds without small aerosol particles acting as "seeds" to start the formation of cloud droplets. As aerosol concentration increases within a cloud, the water in the cloud gets spread over many more particles, each of which is correspondingly smaller. Smaller particles fall more slowly in the atmosphere and decrease the amount of rainfall. In this way, changing aerosols in the atmosphere can change the frequency of cloud occurence, cloud thickness, and rainfall amounts.

If there are more aerosols, scientists expect more cloud drops to form. Since the total amount of condensed water in the cloud is not expected to change much, the average drop must become smaller. This has two consequences -- clouds with smaller drops reflect more sunlight (as explained in Figure 2a & b), and such clouds last longer, because it takes more time for small drops to coalesce into drops that are large enough to fall to the ground. Both effects increase the amount of sunlight that is reflected to space without reaching the surface.

Researchers from the National Center for Atmospheric Research have analyzed that black carbon aerosols cause reduced monsoon rainfall over India.

They analyzed a six-member ensemble of twentieth-century simulations with changes to only time-evolving global distributions of black carbon aerosols in a global coupled climate model to study the effects of black carbon (BC) aerosols on the Indian monsoon.

According to their findings, the BC aerosols act to increase lower-tropospheric heating over South Asia and reduce the amount of solar radiation reaching the surface during the dry season.

With the onset of the monsoon, the reduced surface temperatures in the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and over India that extend to the Himalayas act to reduce monsoon rainfall over India itself, with some small increases over the Tibetan Plateau.

Precipitation over China generally decreases due to the BC aerosol effects.

During the summer monsoon season, the model experiments show that BC aerosols have likely contributed to observed decreasing precipitation trends over parts of India, Bangladesh, Burma, and Thailand.

These experiments point to the regional importance of BC aerosols for rainfall patterns over much of Asia, and in the Indian monsoon region in particular, and rely in part on changes to sea surface temperatures in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during March-April-May period that extend to the summer monsoon season to contribute to the decreases of rainfall over parts of India due to BC aerosols.

The next time you fill your gas tank up and try to squeeze in that last drop to so you can go further with less trips to the gas station remember this...Topping off your gas tank defeats the automatic shutoff valve thats there to allow room for the gas to expand in your tank. When you you top off you defeat the valve, thereby releasing large amounts of a known carcinogen called Benzene. Not only are you damaging the valve on your car which can lead to gas leaks, you are contributing to the damage of your health through high exposure to Benzene fumes which are invisible to the human eye.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency classifies benzene as a Class A carcinogen and has concluded that Oregon’s cancer risk “is dominated by the emissions of benzene.”

  • Studies show that breathing air contaminated with benzene inflicts genetic damage linked to childhood leukemia.
  • Recently, researchers are taking a closer look at what seems to be a direct connection between a parent’s benzene exposure and the likelihood of leukemia in their offspring.
  • Neighborhoods within two blocks of gas stations are exposed to benzene levels that increase the risk for leukemia, a cancer of the blood-making organs.
